Acid Free Tissue

Shutterbugs, art collectors and collectors of vintage documents, garments and other items will know of the importance of acid-free archival tissue paper. Acid-free paper is either made without materials with acid, or has the acid removed, such as from wood pulp. The absence of acid means the paper will not cause any reaction with articles the paper comes into contact with, such as photographs, art prints, documents, garments and other items. Buffered tissue has a coating of calcium carbonate to protect against acid migration. Unbuffered tissue does not have such a coating, which is best for items that react to the calcium, such as certain photographic prints such as cyanotypes or photographs printed with a dye-transfer process. Un-buffered tissues are also used with silk, wool and metals as it is also anti-tarnish.
